Finding a Safe Harbor at 42 Wolfsburg

This is the story of Hanna who, together with her partner Dimitry, were students at the UCode school in Kiev (formerly 42 Kiev). When the war in Ukraine started, Hanna and Dimitry decided to leave Kiev to search for a new home. Their journey was difficult and complicated, but along the way they discovered our Safe Harbor program, offered to students of other 42 schools. Safe Harbor offers those students the ability to integrate smoothly in the 42 Wolfsburg community and continue their studies with us, whilst also providing them financial support. The program is run by active students who have been members of our community for a while. Hanna wants to become a Web Developer in the future. She is really motivated to bring other Ukrainian students to our school to help them build their new lives. So this is the story of how she joined us. Down below, you will also find versions of her story written in Ukrainian and Russian.

Time flies when you feel safe and at home. It seems like an eternity from the moment we first learned about 42 Wolfsburg to where we are today. My family’s journey seeking refuge from the war began just three months ago.

I have always been a person who plans everything in advance. My husband and I had a clear plan for the future: to study, to furnish our own home, to travel. But then the war in Ukraine broke, everything was filled with uncertainty. Uncertainty about what to do, what our next day will be or simply wondering where we will wake up. With time the questions only multiplied.

For a week we believed the conflict would soon pass and that everything would return to normal soon... Next to the growing uncertainty, it was getting harder to ignore the air raids. The fear for our safety became unbearable. The future we dreamed about building with my husband was slipping away and we felt powerless.

The only decision which was within our power was to stay or leave. So we decided to leave. It wasn’t an easy decision but it felt like the only one.

To put a very long story full with different challenges short, we took my mother to Czech Republic where she felt safe, and we continued our journey into seeking a better place for ourselves.. That’s when we received an invitation from Max Senges, the headmaster of 42 Wolfsburg, to continue our education in Wolfsburg in the sister university of our prior education institution in Kyiv.

At that point this opportunity was all we were seeking. At first, we were very afraid for countless reasons. We were also doubting ourselves, wondering if we could handle the program, especially after all the emotional scars we gathered after the beginning of the war. Additionally, we were anxious about the people we are going to meet there and so on and so on. There are always reasons to worry. Most of the time quite justified considering the circumstances. Uncertainty is our enemy, remember?

But in this case, it allowed us to find the better place we have been longing for. Back then I didn’t realize that we are not only going to have the opportunity to continue working towards our dream but also meet an incredible community. 42 Wolfsburg became much more than just a programming university for us.

42 Wolfsburg stands behind representing the school’s values through actions. First and foremost, it is a strong team to support you. It’s connected with our main education method — peer-to-peer. We pass on our experience to each other, and in this way we teach each other. But in reality, it’s not just about passing on knowledge.

42 Wolfsburg strives to provide all information necessary for smooth sailing. Starting with arranging accommodation to tackling questions arising during your first days in Wolfsburg and settling in. 42 is actively supporting you and reminding you that you are not alone in your struggles.

Whenever you have questions or need assistance with any expected or unexpected issues, there is always someone ready to step in and help you out — be it with just listening, giving an advice, a car ride or navigating through the German bureaucratic particularities. Our uncertainty, fears and worries have been replaced by constant support, active listening and understanding.

Even when you are afraid to say something wrong, you know that you will be understood. When you are unsure that if can implement a new idea, you know that you will be taught by like-minded people.

My time at 42 Wolfsburg reminded me of a movie that I watched years back charming me with its idea. The movie is called “Pay It Forward” (2000) and it’s based on the philosophy of kindness among strangers as a means to create the world we want to live in. Although idealistic, the idea is inspiring, the same as the example 42 Wolfsburg is setting for others. We are a large community ready to help each other and others to overcome our struggles, to grow not only professionally but as human beings.

Ideals are often not enough. 42 Wolfsburg wants to offer Ukrainian refugees as well as Russian dissidents scholarships and financial support to cover our living expenses while studying at 42 Wolfsburg and adapting to the new environment. To reach this goal the university has started a fundraising campaign on Betterplace, winning the support of many private people and companies.

The 42 Staff Members are readily available for all bureaucratic and legal questions as well as great support in finding accommodation. They have always taken my best interest and personal wishes into account and take the time to present and explain all available options.

And that’s just a small part of their help. In addition, 42 Wolfsburg creates opportunities for all students that most programming institutes cannot:

• support with finding internships at the best companies in Germany and around the world
• give the skills to work in a development team
• teach students how to self-organize to find a work-life balance and encourage them to take initiative when they want something.

In addition to studying, there are a number of activities enriching our student lives by 1000%. Be it an educational or an entertainment event — there is always something going on. I’ve never had so much fun and interests at the same time before.

All this would have been impossible to achieve by one person. It is a group effort. The university’s staff and students are one creative and constantly developing organism, supporting and motivating each other. That’s why you never get bored here :)

I am grateful to the staff of 42 Wolfsburg for their support and happy to have dared a step into the unknown to discover this community. It creates a cozy home atmosphere in a new place, the inspiration to learn and keep improving. And yes, thanks to this we are now planning our future again :)

Досвід українських біженців у 42 Вольфсбург

Коли я думаю про те як ми познайомились з 42 Вольфсбург,то здається що це було давно,хоча пройшло всього 3 місяці.

Ці три місяці змінили життя багатьох людей назавжди. Моє і моєї сім’ї так точно.Я завжди була людиною яка все планує зазделегідь. Наш чіткий план з чоловіком на майбутнє був: вивчитись, облаштувати власну домівку, подорожувати.

Але тут прийшла війна в Україну і все заполонила непевність. Непевність в тому що краще робити,який буде твій наступний день,де ти прокинешься і питання тільки множилися…

Перший тиждень ми вірили,що перебудемо це. Ми намагалися пристосуватися до повітряних тривог,до постійної метушні, до страху. Але це ставало нестерпно.

Тому ми вирішили поїхати. Супроводили мою маму до Чехії,а самі лишилися на роздоріжжі. Тоді ми і отримали запрошення від Макса Сенджеса — директора 42 Вольфсбург — приїхати до школи.

Напочатку ми дуже боялися,що не зможемо спілкуватися зі студентами,не “витягнемо” програму, не витримаємо навантаження емоційно. Постійна непевність — наш ворог,пам’ятаєте?

Але тоді я ще навіть не розуміла куди ми потрапили, бо 42 Вольфсбург — це не тільки про навчання програмування.

В першу чергу,це міцна команда по взаємодопомозі. Не останню роль у цьому відіграє те,що ми навчаємось за методом peer-to-peer. Ми передаємо один одному свій досвід і таким чином навчаємо один одного. Але на ділі,це не тільки про передачу знань.

В школі ви завжди знайдете того хто вас вислухає, порадить, допоможе вам з переїздом.Непевність змінилася постійною підтримкою.

Боїтесь щось не так сказати — вас зрозуміють, непевні що зможете втілити нову ідею — тут вас чекають однодумці, не вмієте чогось — вас навчать:)

Така філософія нагадує фільм “Заплати іншому”(2000),де люди за допомогу однієї людини мали допомогти комусь іншому.

Те саме правило працює і тут. Ми — велика спільнота,яка готова допомогти один одному та іншим. Задля цієї мети школа відкрила збір коштів на платформі Better Place,щоб підтримати українських студентів,які намагаються адаптуватися у Вольфсбургу.

На даний момент у школі допомагають українцям з:

• Отриманням документів
• Поселенням
• Облаштуванням

І це тільки мала частка їхньої допомоги. Крім того, 42 Вольфсбург відкриває для своїх студентів можливості,які більшість курсів програмування не можуть,а саме:

• організовують стажування у найкращих компаніях Німеччини та світу
• дають навички роботи у команді розробки
• вчать налаштовувати свій робочий час

Також крім навчання,у школі організовують цілу низку заходів — навчальних і розважальних,які збагачують життя студентів на 1000%. Мені так цікаво і весело в одночас ніколи ще не було.

Але це не заслуга тільки однієї людини. Все керівництво школи — це один креативний організм,який постійно підтримує і мотивує студентів щось вигадувати. Тому тут ніколи не занудьгуєш:)

Я вдячна всьому керівництву 42 Вольфсбург за таку їхню підтримку. Саме вона нам створює домашній затишок на новому місці та натхнення навчатися. І так, завдяки цьому тепер ми знову плануємо наше майбутнє:)

Опыт украинских беженцев в 42 Вольфсбург

Когда я думаю о том, как мы познакомились с 42 Вольфсбург, кажется, что это было давно, хотя прошло всего 3 месяца.

Эти три месяца изменили жизнь многих людей навсегда. Мою и моей семьи так точно. Я всегда была человеком, который все планирует заранее. Наш четкий план с мужем на будущее был: выучиться, обустроить собственный дом, путешествовать.

Но тут пришла война в Украине и все заполнила неуверенность. Неуверенность в том, что лучше делать, какой будет твой следующий день, где ты проснешься, и вопросы только множились.

Первую неделю мы верили, что перебудем это. Мы пытались приспособиться к воздушным тревогам, к постоянной суете, к страху. Но это становилось невыносимо.

Поэтому мы решили уехать. Сопроводили мою маму в Чехию, а сами остались на распутье. Тогда мы и получили приглашение от Макса Сенджеса — директора 42 Вольфсбурга — приехать в школу.

Вначале мы очень боялись, что не сможем общаться со студентами, не вытащим программу, не выдержим нагрузки эмоционально. Постоянная неуверенность — наш враг, помните?

Но тогда я еще даже не понимала куда мы попали, ибо 42 Вольфсбург — это не только школа по обучению программированию.

В первую очередь, это крепкая команда взаимопомощи. Не последнюю роль в этом играет то, что мы учимся по методу peer-to-peer. Мы передаем друг другу свой опыт и таким образом учим друг друга. Но на деле это не только о передаче знаний.

В школе вы всегда найдете того, кто вас выслушает, посоветует, поможет вам с переездом. Наша неуверенность сменилась постоянной поддержкой.

Боитесь что-то не так сказать — вас поймут, неуверенные, что сможете воплотить новую идею — здесь вас ждут единомышленники, не умеете что-то — вас научат :)

Такая философия напоминает фильм “Заплати другому” (2000), где люди за помощь одного человека должны были помочь кому-то другому.

То же правило работает и здесь. Мы — большое сообщество, готовое помочь друг другу и другим. Для этой цели школа открыла сбор средств на платформе Better Place, чтобы поддержать украинских студентов, пытающихся адаптироваться в Вольфсбурге.

На данный момент в школе помогают украинцам из с:

• получением документов
• поселением
• обустройством на новом месте

И это только малая часть их помощи. Кроме того, 42 Вольфсбург открывает для своих студентов возможности, которые большинство курсов программирования не могут, а именно:

• организовывают стажировку в лучших компаниях Германии и мира
• дают навыки работы в команде разработки
• учат настраивать свое рабочее время

Также, помимо обучения, в школе постоянно происходит целый ряд мероприятий — учебных и развлекательных, обогащающих жизнь студентов на 1000%. Мне так интересно и весело в одно и то же время еще не было.

Но это не заслуга только одного человека. Все руководство школы — это один креативный организм, постоянно поддерживающий и мотивирующий студентов что-то придумывать. Поэтому здесь никогда не скучаешь :)

Я благодарна всему руководству 42 Вольфсбург за такую ​​их поддержку. Именно она создает домашний уют на новом месте и вдохновение учиться. И да, благодаря этому теперь мы снова планируем наше будущее :)
